How to throw a real Cinco de Mayo party
It’s the beginning of May and the weather is starting to warm up so why not throw a great Cinco de Mayo celebration party and enjoy with your friends and family! You don’t have to be Mexican to have a blast, just let the Latin vibe flow and everything will be set for an unforgettable evening.
There are three things you most definitely need to have to throw a successful celebration:
The concept:
First you need to have a good understanding of what the celebration is all about. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence, it is the celebration of the victory over the French army, which at that time was trying to invade Mexico. Second, you need to create the atmosphere. Decorate the designated space to recreate a Mexican
cantina by covering your furniture with pieces of
zarapes (Mexican colorful striped fabric), mariachi hats (or cowboy hats) and a few cactus motifs (you can buy small to medium sized plants at the market). Hanging colorful lanterns in a random manner can add a festive and relaxed touch to your party.
The food and drink:
Mexican parties are all about eating and drinking. So be bold and greet your guests with lemon margaritas and then treat them to a full Mexican gourmet extravaganza. Almost anything can be turned into tacos, and if you want to add a touch of realism to your party prepare an ensemble of rice, beans, meat and/ or chicken and place them on a table, in separate plates, (preferably of different styles and colors) together with tortillas, salsa and shredded cheese. Mexican food goes great with alcohol free beverages like fruit punch and other fruit flavored natural beverages (watermelon is a must have).
The music:
A genuine Mexican party cannot be complete without a great array of music and dancing. Offer your guests a complete selection of Mexican music. Treat them to the real Mexican experience with mariachis, guitars, rancheras, cumbias, boleros, salsa, huapangos and jazzy Tijuana brass. Visit your local music store for different options.
Combine these three elements and you’re in the way of having a wonderful time! But if you want to add the extra sparkles to turn your party it into an amazing yearly event, send your guests save the date magnets with Mexican motifs and treat them with fun Cinco de Mayo party favors.
